The narrator has a fraught relationship with her mother. Throughout her childhood, her mother's mental illness worsens and the narrator starts to bare the onus of her mother's care. The narrator, her sister, her father, and her grandfather all wonder if her mother's condition is inspired by generational trauma. Her state of mind becomes even more tenuous after her husband leaves her and after she kicks Debbie out of the house.

After the narrator decides to move in with Ronnie, she feels guilty for abandoning her mother, as she is her primary companion and caretaker. She lies, saying that she is going to live on campus. She then hires her mother an aide and moves out.
