While visiting the cemetery with Sasha, the narrator is forced to confront her familial, ancestral, and generational trauma for the first time. Throughout her life, the narrator has disassociated from her fraught past in an attempt to spare herself the associated sorrow. However, at the cemetery, she realizes the err of her thinking.
