Who is Mary Whitney in Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood?

Mary is employed in the Parkinson's home as a servant. She is the same age as Grace Marks, and the two girls become friends. Mary has a brief relationship with George that leaves her pregnant. He takes no responsibilty, and Mary proceeds to have an abortion, after which, she dies from complications.
