James Reynolds was Maria’s husband who used Maria’s affair with Alexander to both extort money from the later, but also to discredit him. It is likely that he put Maria up to the affair, though this is not confirmed nor denied by the author. James was constantly in trouble with the law for fraud, but often escaped sentencing thanks to his influential friends. Ultimately, he revealed Alexander’s affair in an attempt to discredit Alexander and give Congress a reason to fire him from his position as Treasury Secretary.
