Hugh Knox was a priest in Saint Croix who used his influence on the island to eventually send Alexander to study in America. Knox was a passionate man who discovered Alexander as a young boy. The priest was so impressed by Alexander’s incredible writing and dedication to learning that he helped Alexander publish his first poems and gave him full access to the library. After a hurricane decimated the island in 1772, Knox was so inspired by Alexander’s letter to his father that he had it anonymously published and was able to convince the citizens of Saint Croix to donate to a fund to send Alexander to the colonies. Even in America, Knox made certain that Alexander was well taken care of, using his connections to introduce Alexander to powerful politicians that Alexander instantly impressed. If not for Knox, Alexander may never have reached America at all.
