James Madison was a former ally to Alexander who eventually became a political enemy after their political views changed. He helped Alexander write the Federalist Essays that led to the ratification of the Constitution. However, despite pushing for a Constitution that established a new federal government, Madison wanted them to be weaker. Alexander advocated for a stronger government, and the two became permanent adversaries.
