The back country is one of the folkways in this book. It refers to the Carolinas and the Appalachian mountains. There is a synchronistic transfer of populations from Britain to the Carolina colonies. Those of North Carolina tended to be from lower Scotland and the borderlands with Northern England. Those of South Carolina tended to come from the English side of the same border.
