The Holocaust is not underway when Einstein elects not to return to Germany. Why does he decide to stay away from his homeland?

Einstein feels that Hitler, and Germany with him, are headed in a dangerous direction and that it is probably safer to stay outside Germany. While he cannot confirm the rumors of Nazi atrocities, he feels that he is unable to live in a country where religious intolerance is clearly building.
