The unique language of the novel inclues country sounding metaphors and descriptions included in the narrations of both Palmer and Josie. For instance, Anton calls for Josie to come back into the kitchen when she is talking to Jack and Palmer. Josie is so frustrated that she thinks: “He could take a flying leap into a steaming pile of cow dung as far as I was concerned” (167).
