The Black Hat is a symbol of greed and insanity. As a scholar, he was never supposed to give into his lust for power. However, after obtaining a significant fortune in his business practices, the Black Hat realized he could be much more than he was trained to be, and turned his greed into a murderous rampage. His willingness to commit suicide to summon Ekwensu, even though his goal originally was to obtain the power for himself, shows that he has lost his mind to the corruption as his greed brings about his end.
