The language of this novel is very much like that of a story one might tell to a friend. The wording and language are those of a well-educated young lady, one who would be very capable of being a governess. Agnes does a very good job of describing what is going on around her and the differences between people whom she meets. In most cases, Agnes does not seem to try to mimic speech patterns of those around her but instead talks for them in her own voice.
