Why was the author's family virtually unaffected by the civil war in Ethiopia as noted in the memoir, Aftershocks?

Though Ethiopia was in the midst of a civil war, Nadia family was largely unaffected by the unrest because her father worked for the UN. His job and the community they lived in protected the family.
