Almas is Nadia's mother, and Osei's first wife. Shortly after giving birth to Nadia's younger sister, Yasmeen, Almas left her family. Though Osei and his daughters rarely talked about Almas, when Nadia asked why she left, Osei told her that her mother's familial trauma kept her from being the mother she might have been. Throughout Nadia's childhood, she desperately hoped Almas would return. Almas' repeated abandonment fractured Nadia's sense of self, and filled her with perpetual longing. Even after Osei died, Almas refused to be a mother to her girls. Despite the heartbreak she caused Nadia, they made amends after Nadia's bout in the blue chair.
