Why do the other students make fun of Sara-Kate at lunch in the novel, Afternoon of the Elves?

When Sara-Kate brings Cream of Wheat cereal to school for lunch, the other students make fun of her. There are rumors that Sara-Kate has allergies to "normal" foods. Hillary later reasons that Cream of Wheat had simply been the cheapest thing Sara-Kate could buy to fill her up.
