How does the author use foreshadowing in After the Dancing Days?

Rostkowski uses foreshadowing when a terribly disfigured soldier, whose eyes follow Annie as his stretcher is born along the platform, mesmerizes her. This is Andrew, who Annie will meet at St. John's Hospital, and with whom she will develop a friendship very soon.
