Who is Annette from After Ever After and what is their importance?

Annette, Steven's girlfriend, is still in the states when Steven goes to Africa but apparently waits for him to get the desire to travel out of his system. Annette is the one who sends Steven the media coverage of the walk-out at the middle school staged by Tad and Lindsey to object to the standardized tests.
