Collins thinks of Faye as, "Weak and frightened. Self-pitying, maybe. But good, too. Basically as good as a woman could be, and hating herself for not being better . . . Suddenly it made sense for Fay to live; it was the only way having lived would make any sense. It was why I had lived, it seemed."
