What is the author's perspective in the nonfiction book, The Afghanistan Papers?

The Afghanistan Papers is written from the perspective of the author, Craig Whitlock. Whitlock does not refer to himself or his process of compiling and analyzing the material that comprises the book. The only point where he explains his approach to the topic is in the Foreword and the in “Note on Sources” post-script section of the book. In the latter he explains how his institutional affiliation with The Washington Post impacted his research. The newspaper filed a series of public information requests to the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction in order to obtain the transcripts of interviews that Whitlock relies upon so heavily. Some of the materials that The Washington Post sought, Whitlock informs his reader, have not yet been made available.
