Miss Margaret Prior from Affinity is a wealthy young girl. Her father has died two years previously. Though she is wealthy, she is not happy and after her father's death she attempts suicide. The family does not know Margaret's secret though. She has been having an affair with a woman named Helen, who has left her to marry Margaret's brother. As a way to keep her mind off of her own problems she starts visiting a local prison where she meets Selina Dawes. When Margaret investigates the circumstances surrounding Selina's incarceration she becomes convinced that Selina was falsely imprisoned and works for her release. Selina convinces her to help her break out of jail and that they are soul mates, destined to be together forever. This is what Margaret truly wants to believe and she allows herself to become sucked into the jail break. Unfortunately, she seems to continue to choose her love interests poorly and once free Selina leaves Margaret an even larger emotional wreck than before.
