Huck Finn is a young boy running away to take back the freedom he lost when he began living with the widow. His father's return, also played a large part in his decision to run. Pap beat him regularly and had been gone a long time. He returned because he'd heard about Huck and Tom finding treasure.

Jim is a runaway slave, attempting to make his way to Cairo, freedom, and his family. He is good natured, superstitious, loyal, and a steadfast friend.

Huck's conflict is a moral one. He's been brought up in a world of slavery. Jim is an escaped slave. He is torn between doing what was legally right.... turning Jim in and morally right.... helping him escape. In the end, Jim follows his conscience and what he believes to be the morally correct decision.... he helps Jim.
