The narrative takes place in Switzerland and the country acts as a metaphor for Linda's life and helps explain her character. It is a place that is perfect on the outside, but many of the perceptions that people have about the country are not necessarily true. There are dark sides as drugs dealers exist as well corruption and politicians who try to look perfect, but have affairs and smoke cigarettes. It is also a place that hides injustices of the past. This setting has made it hard for Linda to follow any path other than the one she has up until the point in which the narrative begins.
