Switzerland, the novel's primary setting, symbolizes Linda's life. It is a country that strives to be perfect, normal, and happy, but, below the surface has a dark, turbulent side. Linda is like the country in that, on the surface, she has the perfect life, but during the narrative, she lives a dark life in which she chases a married man and tries to have his wife arrested. She does all of this in the name of improving her "self" just as John Calvin's actions are done in the name of the betterment of Switzerland.
