One of the two female companions is a love interest of the speaker, who has either been a lover in the past or who rejected the speaker’s advances (or both). This woman is widely believed to represent Yeats’ lifelong love interest Maud Gonne, an Irish activist who Yeats pursued dedicatedly throughout his life and who turned down multiple proposals before (and after) marrying another man. In the poem, this woman is a silent presence; however, her presence is keenly felt by the speaker, who wants to voice their unspoken thoughts to her.
