The celebration in the North was described. What do you think the South was like when the surrender was announced?

This question calls for your opinion. There is no right or wrong answer. In context, we can infer that southern soldiers were torn and beaten, they were likely also thrilled to be able to return to their families. The changes in the South would create another long and arduous journey for those who served the Confederacy. The slave population would have been filled with joy.... and also a bit frightened of the changes they would undergo as well. This is, of course, my opinion.
