The terza rima sonnet uses an interlocking rhyme scheme in which the first and third lines of each stanza rhyme together, and take their rhyme from the second line of the preceding stanza. The final closing couplet rhymes and takes its rhyme from the two rhyming lines of the opening stanza. Thus, the rhyme scheme of the poem is as follows: ABA BCB CDC DAD AA.
