What causes the change in Jack's friendship with Devon in the novel, Ace of Spades?

Jack and Devon were best friends growing up. Jack, however, starts to resent Devon because he thinks Black people have "advantages" that he (a poor white boy) does not. In the end, Jack works with Aces to spy on Devon and ruin his life.
