Why does Ghost Bird choose to leave the Moaning Creature unharmed in the novel, Acceptance?

Initially, Ghost Bird feels compelled to put the Moaning Creature out of its misery, but then reasons that she is attributing her own understanding to the sounds the creature is making, which may be perfectly normal for it. In the end, she leaves it to live its life unharmed.
