One example of symbolism can be found in the chess piece that Control's father carved. It is shaped like a cat and reminds Control of his Chorry, his cat, that he had to leave behind. When he is in Area X, it is this carving that gives him some measure of comfort. It represents his father’s love and constancy and his own humanity. When he releases his father's carving before stepping into the flower at the end of the novel, it is clear that he is giving up his humanity to embrace this new self.
