What causes Henry to hit the dogmonger with an iron in the book, Abundance: A Novel?

When the dogmonger's companions shoot holes in his car tires, he demands that Henry give him his truck keys. Realizing that the man has a gun, Henry reacts by hitting him in the head with an iron.
