Who is Alistar 'Ali' from About a Boy and what is their importance?

Alistar (Ali) is Rachel's son. He is described as a tall, typical boy, who enjoys punk music and skateboarding. When he meets Marcus, he threatens to kill him if Will attempts to date his mother. We later learn that the last man Rachel dated was cruel, causing Rachel and Ali to become weary of new people.
