What does Abel do when he finally returns home in the novel, Abel’s Island?

Once he arrives safely back home, Abel washes up and dresses in his best clothes. He puts the scarf on the entrance hall for Amanda to see as she enters. He lies down on the sofa. She comes in and screams, "Abel! Oh, dear Abel! It's you! It's really, really you!" (Chapter 20, p. 117). They cover each other with kisses. Abel says he has brought the scarf back to her.
