Anne was banished from the settlement because she read, was happy, and was able to own and run a successful business. Instead of dying in the wilderness as many banished women did, Anne built a home for herself. She was joined by two other women who were rumored to have planted three pine trees as a signal to other women that was a safe place. Ruth infers it was those women who founded the village of Three Pines.
