The exposition, the description of Gamache’s time as a young officer and again as the officer who investigated Clotilde’s death, takes up almost the first third of the novel. Fiona and Sam’s roles in their mother’s death are significant to the main plot of the story, which begins with Gamache’s discovery of the painting hidden in Myrna’s loft.
