The bricks in the novel are symbols of shock, wrongdoing, and consistency. The brick that Harriet gives Myrna as a gift is a symbol of shock because no one understands why she is giving her aunt a brick. The bricks are symbols of wrongdoing because they are used to kill and hurt so many people. Clotilde and Fleming are both killed by blows to the head with a brick. Sam, Harriet, and Robert are all injured by bricks. The use of the brick is a symbol of consistency, suggesting that the same person, Sam, killed and injured most of the people, including his mother. Fleming was killed by Gamache in an attempt to save himself and his family.
