The author juxtaposes good and evil, demonstrating that evil can often hide behind the face of something or someone who appears benign. In this novel, the juxtaposition culminates with the discovery that Fleming has been masquerading as the minister. Penny begins this juxtaposition with her description of the child’s stickers in Clotilde’s record book. The theme is furthered when the police captain, Dagenais, is identified as one of the men who has been taking advantage of Sam and Fiona. The idea that good can be used to disguise evil builds to Gamache’s discovery that Robert is Fleming in disguise.
