The Gestapo and the Abwehr were two branches of the Nazi Secret Service, and were bitter rivals. The Gestapo was the secret police, and more violent and ruthless; the Abwehr was the intelligence-gathering service, more subversive and calculating. Tensions between the two factions led to fierce competition for captures and victories over the Resistance, with the desire of one to win over the other occasionally leading Resistance fighters like Virginia to slip through.
