In terms of focus, the book’s perspective is almost entirely on its central character, war hero and spy Virginia Hall. From the first words of the Prologue to the final words of the Epilogue, the, narrative’s consideration of Virginia’s identity, purposes, and career manifests from a variety of different angles (e.g. who she was as a woman, as someone living with a disability, as an American, as a patriot); all, however, are examined with an eye towards shaping as complete a portrait as possible of a woman who specialized in keeping her identity secret from almost everyone.
