Robert Alesch was a double agent in France during World War II, working for both the French and the Germans. He was a Roman Catholic priest, but a very worldly one, taking considerable comfort and pleasure in worldly indulgences like food, art, and expensive furniture. He betrayed a large number of Resistance fighters to the Nazis as a result of making them believe that he supported their aims, and was so convincing that even Virginia believed him. Several of her closest allies were betrayed to the Nazis as a result.
