The bedroom window is a symbol of Isra and Deya’s desire for freedom. It is a literal and metaphorical window to the outside world. It also connects Deya and Isra’s stories. Many of Isra’s perspectives begin with her staring out the bedroom window, whether sad or bored. Deya similarly often stands by that same window, thinking of her mother and wondering what her life will bring her. Deya remembers her mother often sitting silently and sadly by the window as well. Without books to read or friends, Isra entertains herself by looking out the window and wondering what the next day will bring her. When she starts reading, she always reads by the window. One night after Adam beats her bloody, it is through this window that Isra escapes and runs away, only to be brought back home. The window then transforms from a symbol of what she wants - access to the outside world and freedom - to what she cannot have.
