Why does Eddy smash the sand bottle that his brother gave him as a gift in the novel, A Woman’s Battles and Transformations?

When Eddy's younger brother humiliates him in front of their mother, Eddy is determined to get back at him. He therefore smashes the sand bottle his brother made for him. He wants to hurt his brother as much as his brother has hurt him.
