How does the author use foreshadowing in A Wild Sheep Chase?

In Chapter One, the death of the protagonist's (unnamed) old college friend and lover comes as a slight surprise to him, but serves to show his character as a soft-hearted and caring friend, while simultaneously foreshadowing the wayward journey of the man throughout the story.
