Who is "He" and "She" from A Walker in the City and what is their importance?

These two unnamed characters are the author's companions on his frequent journeys to Highland Park (see "Objects/Places") on the summer evenings of his sixteenth year. They accompany him separately, "he" older, more educated, critiquing his youthful writing and "she", fifteen, arm in arm with the author, her presence becomes part of his "yearnings".
