In this story, Cather uses music to symbolize beauty and personal fulfillment. Music seems to be Georgiana’s greatest joy in life, for when she lived in Boston she studied music and worked as a music teacher. However, after she moved to Nebraska with Howard, she had almost no access to music whatsoever. This loss pains her, but she eventually becomes somewhat numb to it. However, her awareness of her own unhappiness is sharpened after seeing the orchestral concert in Boston with Clark.
