News symbolizes how the facts of a case can be manipulated to someone’s advantage. This demonstrates how someone can be made to feel powerless to an extent that someone going against the system would choose to surrender instead of fight. The news station offers commentary to shame Montalbano for playing a role in Borsellino’s alleged suicide. Instead of succumbing to the power of the news. Montalbano uses the press to the flush out Mariangela’s killer, leading to Professor Strangio’s suicide.
