Who is Burr from A Virtuous Woman and what is their importance?

Burr is another tenant farmer on the Hoover land. Burr has no land himself and few prospects. Mr. Hoover comes to Burr with a proposition. Hoover’s daughter is pregnant and he wants Burr to marry her to make things look respectable. He offers Burr land in exchange for marring his daughter. Burr does not love the Hoover girl but jumps at the chance to own his own land.
