What is the theme in A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings by Gabriel Garcia Marquez?

I would say human nature with its inherent cruelty and compassion is the theme here. The town was capable of compassion but their darker and abusive nature got the better of them. Their interpretation of an angel changes: they are unable to see beyond their narrow viewpoint.
