What do you think the old man really is, and what makes you think so?

I think the old man is an angel or at least an angel-figure. He embodies what Christ told his followers to look for in order to find him. The old man can even be seen as a metaphor for the injured Christ on the cross: he is dirty and he is vulnerable but also divine if people choose to see this.
