One example of symbolism can be seen in the Beastie, which serves as a symbol of unconditional love. The Beastie is a vague, flat, headless animal that serves as the boy's living blanket while in the hospital. His primary purpose is to comfort those around him. When the boy dies, the Beastie also dies from his grief, suggesting that the loss of the boy has destroyed his purpose for living altogether.
