How are the key characters depicted as selfish and self-centered in Chapter 24?

Many of the key characters are self-centered at this point in the tale. Attorney Norman Reinfeld is not interested in saving Carl Ray from a conviction, but only in the glory of another trial. Jake does not hold Carl Lee's interests before his own. And the black ministers are clearly more interested in their own concerns than the welfare of the Haileys.
