The author uses Mr. Shi's cooking to symbolize his desire to establish a better relationship with his daughter. Just as the thousand years of prayers, which Mr. Shi believes created his ability to be a father, were long and arduous work, Mr. Shi is willing to put effort into honoring and growing this relationship.
